Almerķa (pop. 160 000)
The largest city in eastern Andalusia and namesake of the stretch of coastline it resides upon. Like most other Andalusian cities, Almerķa is marked by the Arab presence in Medieval times and, although not displaying the most numerous and magnificent Moorish architecture in the region, it may be the best preserved. The city sets itself apart by its potent African ambience, and tantalizing mix of sleepy, traditionally Spanish neighborhoods and busy, modern areas frequented by local professionals and tourists.
