Cadiz (pop. 158 000)
Situated on a west coast peninsula, almost surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean,
Cadiz has been an important port since it was founded by the Phoenicians in
1100 BC (making it one of the oldest cities in Spain). Unlike most cities in
Andalusia, it was not significant to the Arabs who rather neglected its existence,
but begun to bloom in the early 16th century when it was used as a port of origin
for expeditions to the recently discovered Americas. Cadiz breaths a quaint
charm influenced by its connections with overseas cultures and holds a yearly
very festive carnival for a month in February/March.
