Grenada (pop. 290 000)
Grenada is, together with Sevilla, perhaps the most famous of the Andalusian
cities, with its main attraction being the Alhambra Palace. The palace was built
by the last great Moorish rulers in the 14th century and is a breathtakingly
beautiful example of Arab architectural ingenuity. The construction is fine
preserved since the fall of the last Moorish Kingdom (the Nazari) in 1492, and
has been declared a World Heritage by UNESCO. Grenada is home to a multitude
of other historical treasures, many of them nestled into every-day life, such
as the neighborhood hosting the Medieval Arab Medina or Cashbah, a myriad of
compressed white-washed houses and small, meandering streets.
